personal views on movies... and some other things

The Adventures of Tintin

Yesterday, I had the fortune of watching The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn as it is already released here in Greece, and all I have to say is "trust Steven Spielberg". He always manages to make fun films and he still hasn't lost his touch. I mean, even Indiana Jones 4 was enjoyable, even if it had some script problems.
I am a big fan of Tintin's and I am happy to say that the film did not disappoint. What Spielberg manages to do here, is that he takes a great character from a great comic book, he brings him to the big screen and while he keeps the feeling of the original material, he also adds something new and fresh in order to bring over some new fans. Let's be honest: no book or comic book can be perfectly translated to the big screen. Something will always be missing and even if the translation is considered generally successful, there will always be some people who would complain about one or two things. And that happens because when something is brought to the big screen, there is always one thing missing: the imagination of the reader.
Spielberg, however, has made a great adventure while he shows the proper and very-much-welcome respect to the original material. It is easily shown that he -too- is a fan of the comics. In this movie, one can find the mystery of the comic books, Hergé's humour and originality and Spielberg's sense of adventure. This is a combination to kill for.
One more thing: this movie works perfectly as an introduction to the world of Tintin. It introduces the, ignorant to the comic books, viewers to a lovable and charismatic main character, a funny and troublesome Captain Haddock, two very funny Dupont & Dupond and a very cute, smart and exceptionally faithful Milou. As the film comes to an end after a glorious adventure that feels like you're reading one of Hergé's comics, you can't help but feel the growing anticipation for a sequel..and another..and another. Good job.
