AIFF 2017: "The Nile Hilton Incident" Review

Meet Noredin (Fares Fares), a policeman like all others in Cairo, a city reeking of corruption and desperation as the revolution of 2011 comes closer and closer. You cannot find right or wrong in such a city when everyone tries to survive no matter what, with whatever means they may find. That is why everybody is a thief, or at least bribable. So how can someone serve justice in a world like this?
It is at the time of a conversation with his father when Noredin, being confronted with the question of where he managed to come in possession of a significant amount of money, seems to understand that he has been doing something wrong his whole life. So he wakes up and realises that he has to do some good in this rotten city. The money of course has come from the pocket of the famous singer Lalena who was found dead with a slit throat in her hotel room and as Noredin investigates what seems to be a regular murder, he gets mixed in a story much bigger than first anticipated as it may involve a member of the Parliament; and naturally, big people do not want this mystery unsolved.
Tarik Saleh manages to create a rather intriguing and quite frustrating thriller, even though he does not add anything new to the genre. The Nile Hilton Incident is a classic film noir which lures us in a maze of twists and backstabbings and keeps our attention drawn throughout its duration as the political and social Egyptian climate is simmering throughout Cairo.
It is always interesting to take a look at what life is like in countries which are not in the western hemisphere and see how they cope with situations such as this. But what always disappoints me is the fact that our world seems rotten no matter where you look and not even a policeman, who has had a change of heart and would like to improve things, could be considered a symbol of righteousness or justice in a world that questions everyone's motives and depends only on the survival of the strongest.
