personal views on movies... and some other things

"Before Midnight"

In 1995 Richard Linklater wrote and directed a small film that starred Ethan Hawke and Julie Deply and it was the simple yet romantic story of two people in their twenties who meet in a train in Europe and fall deeply in love. Jesse and Céline spend their day in Vienna and they know that this might be the only night they'll ever spend together. The film was Before Sunrise and it is a great example of how powerful a simple story can be.

Nine years later, Before Sunset was released. It was written by Linklater, Delpy and Hawke and it follows these two characters who meet again -9 years later- in Paris. Life has moved on, they've both lived a lot but the sparkle between them still exists. Will they manage to get past all the years that they've grown apart and remember what made them "click" the first time?

The amazing thing about these films is how much they depend on dialogue and the interaction between the two protagonists. These aren't films based on plot, they are character driven and they depend heavily on character exposition in order for them to work. They also manage to present characters who are believable and seem to grow and develop with each movie, like real people do. That's why young people may identify more with the first movie seeing as the leads have the needs and worries of a 20-year-old while some older people can see themselves in the older Jesse and Céline of the 2nd and possibly the 3rd movie.

Speaking of a 3rd movie, the trailer for the last part of the trilogy has just come out. The film is called Before Midnight and this time Jesse and Céline are in Greece and they'll have to experience another emotional journey in their interesting lives. Feeling a little proud that my country looks beautiful in the trailer and also a bit emotional because the song that's being used is Haris Alexiou's Για ένα τανγκό (For one tango),which I love, I present to you Jesse and Céline's last journey, here in beautiful Greece:
