personal views on movies... and some other things

The new "Gravity" trailer is jaw-dropping

Gravity, Alfonso CuarĂ³n's new movie and one of the most anticipated films of the year is coming closer to its release date, after being in production for many years.

Anyone who has stayed in touch with the news concerning the production of this particular film might know the obstacles that it had to surpass in order to even start being filmed. One of the main problems was finding the actress who would take the lead role in this space survival adventure. Many great women, such as Angelina Jolie, Marion Cotillard, Natalie Portman, Rachel Wiesz and Naomi Watts, were approached but due to cancellations and delays most of them couldn't commit to the production. Finally, Sandra Bullock signed to take the demanding role of a woman astronaut stranded in space. The film includes one more big name, George Clooney who plays her fellow astronaut and these are the only two people who appear on screen.

If you are familiar with Alfonso CuarĂ³n's work (he is one of my favourite directors of all time) you know about his extended use of long takes. Take a look at another great film of his: Children of Men and see it for yourself. The new trailer for his new film is 2 minutes of one take and shows exactly what CuarĂ³n is famous for. And if rumours are right, the opening scene is a 17-minute one take. At least that was what CuarĂ³n intended. We'll see for ourselves when this film comes out on October 4th.
