AIFF 2014: What if

It doesn't matter if you like romantic films, it doesn't even matter if you're not in the group that What if targets, there is only one truth and that is that when you see a name as big as Daniel Radcliffe's in a film you're either going to watch it or you know that people are going to watch it for sure. One other truth is that Michael Dowse's new film may not be anything original but it is really sweet and enjoyable.
As with every romantic film, you know the ending (or at least you hope you have found the ending) but it really isn't about the way things work out -or don't- in the end. It is about how you get to go there. What If tells the story of two people Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) and Chantry (Zoe Kazan) who meet at a party and they immediately click. They talk and they laugh even though they both seem a bit awkward with human interactions and at the end they even leave the party together. But Chantry has a 5-year relationship and they decide mutually to be friends as they really have fun together. However, can men and women be friends? This is the ultimate question. And because this film asks this question it is so constantly compared to When Harry Met Sally. But they honestly are two completely different films.
What if is a really sweet film and the chemistry between Radcliffe and Kazan is undeniable. They make even the most clichéd story feel enjoyable and hey, for the romantics at heart or for those who enjoy watching a rom-com during a chilly autumn weekend What if shouldn't be missed!
