AIFF 2014: Il Capitale Umano

Two families are forever tied together after a jeep hits off a cyclist in the middle of the road the night before Christmas Eve. Il Capitale Umano is told in chapters that show different sides of the story and like puzzle pieces they slowly start to connect and make sense.
In the prologue, we see the accident involving the cyclist without learning anything more. In the first chapter we travel six months earlier and we get to meet Dino (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) a man who drops off his daughter Serena (Matilde Gioli) to her friend's Massimiliano (Guglielmo Pinelli) villa. Seeing all the wealth, he wants to get in touch with the family, so he meets Massimiliano's father, Mr, Bernaschi (Fabrizio Gifuni) and tries to befriend him by making the offer to buy some stocks of his company, even though he, as a mere real-estate agent, hasn't got the money and has to mortrage his own business.
In the second chapter we meet Massimiliano's mother, Carla (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) a kind woman who has married a really rich man but hasn't got any interests and doesn't know how to spend her time. She feels left out as her husband doesn't share his thoughts and worries with her and her son ignores her most of the time. So, she decides to reconstruct the local theatre and bring some culture back to the city.
In the third chapter we see the story through Serena's eyes. She is a girl whose father has married another woman, whose best friend Massimiliano doesn't complete her anymore and who finds herself attracted to a boy who has had some problems in his life but seems to be getting over them with the help of her company.
It all leads to that terrible night when the cyclist is ran over. How disposable is the life of the little people when stocks and businesses owned by "important" people of the society are at stake? That's where the legal term "capitale umano" = human capital (an accident victim's worth in compensation claims) comes under the spotlight.
Il Capitale Umano is a really good film, with flawless performances and a very intriguing plot, one that will make you think a little and will stay with you after the ending credits roll.
