The Best of E3 2018

So, it has been that time of the year again, when all the greatest gaming companies and developers gather at the E3 in Los Angeles and present to us what they have in store. This year, like every year, has been full of surprises both good and bad as we finally saw footage from many highly anticipated games but there were also some omissions as well as the expected but unwanted lack of release dates for many games which we've anxiously been waiting for. So, without further ado here are the best news this year's E3 had to offer:

1. Last of Us

Naughty Dog's highly anticipated sequel was announced in PSX in 2016 with an extremely sentimental trailer and then last year we got a very visceral scene featuring characters we had never seen before. This time, however, we finally got a glimpse of jaw-dropping (yet equally visceral and gory) gameplay. No release date, though. The game looks exceptional, like all of Naughty Dog's creations, and seriously I can't wait for this year's PSX where they should announce a date. Right?

2. Ghost of Tsushima

Another PS4 exclusive that we've been quite excited about is this new samurai adventure that takes place in 1274 on the island of Tsushima in Japan and it looks stunning. It, too, does not have a release date yet.

3. Cyberpunk 2077

CDProjekt Red's new and extremely anticipated project was finally revealed after a lot of years of silence. Sure, the great Polish company had been focused on The Witcher III and its expansions (or..may I say full games?) for the past few years but now the way is open for their new sci-fi RPG called Cyberpunk 2077. The game takes place in Night City in 2077 and it is adapted from the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020. The trailer for the game closed the Microsoft conference but the gameplay has only been shown behind closed doors for those who have special access at E3. The info that we have up to now is that it is a first-person RPG with a customisable male or female character who uses guns and drives vehicles around the city. I can't help being a little disappointed that it is in 1st person as I get motion sickness with these games, but reviews are great and CDProjekt Red is guaranteed to make good games.

4. Resident Evil 2

This was one of the most beautiful surprises during Sony's conference: Capcom's remake of the glorious Resident Evil 2 had us gasp and cheer as we finally saw the main character Leon in high definition and we also got a release date, January 25th. Honestly, the game looks amazing. Check it out.

5. Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Allow me to fangirl for a moment. This is Assassin's freaking Creed in Ancient Greece. I don't even know for how many years I have been asking for such a story (probably since my favourite Assassin's Creed II came out) and it has finally been confirmed and received the release date of October 5th. I know that the Creed series has had its ups and downs and even though I feel like it has lost its purpose along the years I can't help enjoying these games, so now that it takes place in my country and it also looks incredibly good (with its RPG elements of choices as well as the choice of male or female character) I honestly can't wait.

6. Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima's extremely strange game made yet another appearance at this year's Sony conference without providing us with a release date but showing us for the first time a few glimpses at its gameplay. The game looks gorgeous as always but we still know nothing about the story despite the many trailers that we've seen so far. Personally, I don't mind. I like it that Death Stranding is still a huge questionmark even after all these reveals. Let's hope, though, that it is worth the wait and that the wait will soon be over.

7. Kingdom Hearts III

Yes, guys. This is finally happening. The new game in the series developed by Square Enix is finally here. For those not in the know, Kingdom Hearts is a crossover between fictional worlds including Disney, Pixar and Final Fantasy and your hero is Sora who tries to stop the various incarnations of his nemesis Xenanort. Kingdom Hearts III was first teased in 2013, so you can imagine the crowd's enthusiasm when it finally got a release date for January 2019.

8. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Speaking of Square Enix, the third instalment of their Lara Croft trilogy which started in 2013 is coming this September on the 14th and during their conference, they showed us some gameplay for the upcoming game. Lara here seems more lethal than we've ever seen her, but here's hoping that we'll get to explore more tombs and ancient sites as one should do if they're a Tomb Raider.

9. The Elder Scrolls VI

Moving on to Bethesda for a moment, the giant developer had a great conference where it showed  a lot about its plans for the future. The trailer with which it closed its presentation, though, was just an announcement trailer for a fan-favorite: the continuation of The Elder Scrolls, sequel to the highly successful Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

10. Fallout 76

People were waiting for an announcement and they got it. Fallout 76 is kind of a prequel as it takes place before the other Fallout games and the world is not as destroyed as in the other instalments. Also, it is four times bigger than Fallout 4 and it is entirely online. Quite different, don't you think? Fallout 76 comes out on November 14th.

11. Devil May Cry 5

In spring 2019 get ready to experience what Capcom has in mind for the true continuation of the Devil May Cry series. As one of the people who really like Ninja Theory's take on this universe, I feel some disappointment that we won't be getting a DMC 2 but nonetheless Devil May Cry is back and so is Nero and Dante. The game looks a bit like DMC (or is it wishful thinking?) and I hope it is more substance than style.

12. Starfield

Is it sci-fi? Is it space exploration? Is it an RPG or an action game? We know nothing about Bethesda's new announcement but we can't wait to hear more.

13. Halo: Infinite

One of the exclusive games that Microsoft announced was the new Halo game, which had a lot of people cheering. Not much is known about this yet, as this was just an announcement trailer, but all we can understand is that it is a continuation of the events of Halo 5, it is centered on Master Chief and it is possibly an open-world game.

14. Ori and the Will of Whisps

Staying with the Microsoft exclusives for a moment, the sequel to the 2015 Ori and the Blind Forest was announced for 2019. Ori and the Will of Whisps is a platform puzzle game that looks like a fairy tale and gives vibes of older RayMan games. Along with its announcement, gameplay was also shown as you can see below:

15. The Division 2

On March 15th, 2019 Tom Clancy's The Division gets a sequel, this time located in Washington. The gameplay trailer which was revealed in Ubisoft's presentation shows that the game continues the single player and multiplayer mix as you can choose whether to play alone or with (and against) others. Ubisoft has also added a raids mode to the second Division allowing you to collaborate with 7 other players to take on some of the game's most difficult missions.

16. Unravel Two

During the EA Presentation, the Swedish company Coldwood Interactive announced the sequel to their extremely cute and sentimental Unravel which featured a small character made of yarn who travelled through memories in various platforms having to face obstacles and solve puzzles. This time, with Unravel Two, you get to play alone or co-op with a friend. If you choose the first, you have to carry the other yarn character in order to move forward. Unravel Two is already out digitally and if it is anything like its predecessor then we're in for a beautiful ride.

17. Anthem

BioWare's newest entry after last year's Mass Effect Andromeda (which received a lot of backlash for its problematic facial animations - at least in the beginning) is Anthem. Anthem is an online multiplayer action RPG which comes out on February 22nd, 2019. The company showed a lengthy gameplay sequence which seems like a combination of Mass Effect, Destiny and The Division as you play with other players and try to explore some alien planets. In addition to this, BioWare announced that contrary to its previous franchises (Mass Effect and Dragon Age), here we will not get romances; only friendships.

18.  Sea of Solitude

Jo-Mei Games collaborates with EA and brings us a single-player adventure game which looks quite magical. It is the story of Kay who has turned into a black monster and travels to find why and how this has happened to her. With vibes similar to Limbo, this looks amazing.

19. Just Cause 4

On December 4th, the newest Just Cause comes out and it looks explosive and action-packed as usual. This time, however, Rico Rodriguez will find himself in South America where four different types of climate exist: rainforest, grassland, alpine and dessert.

20. Beyond Good & Evil 2

Boy, this looks good. Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a sequel to the homonymous action-adventure game which had come out in 2003 on Playstation 2. It has been long anticipated and even though the trailer did not reveal anything about gameplay or even a release date, it looked jaw-droppingly good.

21. Days Gone

One of Sony's big titles during the past years was Days Gone which recently got a release date for February 22nd, 2019. So, this year, the game wasn't presented in the main event but during the live streaming later on, where the developers gave us some idea on what to expect from this open-world zombie action game. And it looks good.

22. Marvel's Spider-Man

One other PS4 exclusive is Marvel's Spider-Man which comes out on September 7th. Sony decided to show us some gameplay this time around. The gameplay wasn't really different from what they've shown us during previous conferences but the game still looks great, so hopefully this is going to be equivalent to the Arkham games, if not as dark.

23. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Finally, we arrive to one of the big names: From Software. The company that has brought us the amazing Dark Souls series, as well as the PS4 exclusive sensation Bloodborne, returns with a brand new game called Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Reminding us both of Dark Souls as well as Nioh (the samurai equivalent of those games, the sequel of which being also announced) the developers said that we can expect a lot of hard bosses in the game but that death also plays a huge role here as if you die (and you will) you can come right back and use this opportunity "in many ways". Not exactly sure what this means but it sure is an unexpected twist.
