personal views on movies... and some other things

The new Christian Bale film has a trailer

One year after the great The Big Short (which we talked about here) that earned him yet another Academy Award Nomination, Christian Bale returns in a rather important film which promises (no pun intended) to shine the spotlight on a political and humanitarian subject that hasn't been approached by major Hollywood movies despite its importance.
Set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, The Promise is a film that may be described as a love triangle between Michael, a medical student (Oscar Isaac), Ana (Charlotte Le Bon) and Chris, an american reporter (Christian Bale) but it is hopefully much more than that. Because, you see, The Promise directed by Terry George who has also given us Reservation Road (2007) and the incredible Hotel Rwanda (2004) is the first big Hollywood film that touches the sensitive matter of the Armenian Genocide.
For those of you who do not know, the Armenian Genocide took place during the years 1915 to 1923 by the -then- Ottoman Empire and -later- Turkish Republic. Although it is recognised and accepted by historians and academic institutions internationally, on a governmental level the massacres and systematic deportation of those years have been officially recognised by 26 countries as well as 45 (out of 50) of the United States of America. You can learn more about those events here.
As you see, one can only hope that The Promise will do this issue justice.
