AIFF 2016: The Carer

The Carer is a small British film that I caught on the last day of the festival and it was as sweet and moving as I had predicted reading the synopsis. It is directed by János Edelényi, a Hungarian director and screenwriter and it stars Brian Cox [Braveheart (1995), Troy (2004), Matchpoint (2005)], Anna Chancellor [Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)] as well as it introduces Coco König whom we'll also see in this year's Assassin's Creed movie.
This is the story of Dorottya (König), a young Hungarian girl and aspiring actress who works in a house for the elderly and is soon hired to live in an old man's mansion and take care of him. The old man, though, is non other than Sir Michael Gilford (Cox) a multiply-awarded Shakespearian actor who is suffering from Parkinson's dicease and remains isolated in his big house, irritated by the world and angry with anyone who approaches him. His daughter Sophia, played by Emilia Fox [The Casual Vacancy (2015)], does not help matters in any way, as she supports the isolation of her father in order for him not to be humiliated in public and thus, perpetuates his negative view of life.

When Dorottya comes to the house, naturally she wins Sir Michael's heart with her straightforwardness and honesty and they soon become friends. This way, a journey for both of them begins, Dorottya tries to find herself and decides whether she truly wants to become an actress and Sir Michael manages to re-make a connection with the world and come to terms with his condition and the way life works and goes on.
Was it a bit predictable? Yes. But this does not mean that The Carer wasn't a touching story featuring a great performance by the legendary Brian Cox. It might not be a film that I'll reminisce in the future, but it sure was a sweet family film, great to spend an afternoon watching.

The Carer was shown on the 2nd of October.
