Memorable Movie Scenes No. 16

Today is March 25th and it is the anniversary of when, after a long journey, Frodo, Sam and the Gollum entered Mount Doom in the land of Mordor to finally destroy the One Ring. Today is the anniversary of the downfall of Sauron and the fall of Barad-Dur as well as the First Day of the Gondorian year. What is more, on March 25th we celebrate the International Tolkien Reading Day, so I thought that I would dedicate this new memorable scenes entry to one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time: The Lord of the Rings.
But how can someone pick only one scene from 3 films? So here are 10 amazingly memorable moments that will stay with us forever:

10. The Battle in Moria
Here is when we see the Fellowship really work together for the first time as they explore the mines of Moria and eventually come across a Balrog which leads Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) to his apparent death.

9. Helm's Deep
One of the most compelling beginnings of battles in movie history is the one in Helm's Deep, when an innumerable Orc army besieges the gorge where the men, women and children of Rohan have taken refuge. As the fighters line up in anticipation for combat rain starts falling, something which is made even more haunting by the absence of music and the sound of raindrops on metal and dirt.

8. Elves
You cannot deny that the Elves are the most riveting creatures of Middle-Earth and many are the moments when we get the chance to witness their royal presence, but for me the first time that we meet them walking in a forest -in a deleted scene which was later added to the extended versions- is a scene which seems to have come straight out of fairy tales and it portrays Elves exactly as I always imagined them to be.

7. The Black Rider
Our story begins in Hobbiton. It is the absolute fairy land where everything is green and blooming, everyone is happy and carefree and the only annoyance is the arrival of a wizard who carries fireworks. Soon everything changes, though, as the Black Riders have arrived. The first time we witness one is so haunting as the whole land seems to be afraid of him and we feel as if we are holding our breaths along with the terrified hobbits who hide under a tree root.

6. The lighting of the Beacons
The sight of the flames lighting up one by one to notify Rohan that Gondor needs their help, along with the amazing visuals and insuperable music by Howard Shore is one of the most stunning scenes in The Lord of the Rings

5. Arwen wakes the river
This was the first scene of the first movie that I had ever seen before watching the whole Fellowship of the Ring. I remember being at our family cinema which was flooded with so many people who wanted to watch The Lord of the Rings adaptation again and again, that I couldn't find a seat for myself. So, one day I sneaked into the cinema and I stumbled upon this fantastic scene where Arwen (Liv Tyler) rescues Frodo from the Nazgul. It still gives me goosebumps to this day.

4. The Rohirrim ride to Pelennor Fields
As if we did not have enough battles in The Lord of the Rings, the fight in Pelennor Fields is so big and full of things to see that it feels like a separate film. Here is where the fate of Mankind and the rest is going to be decided and every action counts. When the Rohirrim finally arrive to help Gondor, honouring their centuries-long friendship, one cannot but be touched and moved by the feeling of self-sacrifice for the greater good that fills the atmosphere.

3. Aragorn's Coronation
When everything has finally ended, it is time for the King to return to his throne. It is one of the many endings that The Return of the King has been criticised having, but this does not mean that it is not a great scene that brings everyone together for one last time. From Aragorns's (Viggo Mortensen) speech which is sung in Elvish, to his reunion with his true love Arwen, to everyone bowing to the four little hobbits who seem so out of place in this big world which they helped save, I have never managed to keep back the tears watching this moment. And let me tell you, I still remember being at the cinema and seeing almost no dry faces all around me.

2. Sam carries Frodo up to Mount Doom
Maybe one of the most important and greatest heroes in this story, Sam (Sean Astin) is not only Frodo's (Elijah Wood) follower but also a witness of how much the One Ring can affect and burder its bearer. It is not until the end, though, that we see how even the smallest person can find strength where he thought it could never be found. When everything has succumbed to desperation, Sam realises that even though he cannot be the ringbearer himself, he can play his invaluable part to end the story.

1. Our first look at Minas Tirith
Built by the Numenorians, heir of whom is our protagonist Aragorn, the City of Kings is the one place everything leads to in The Lord of the Rings. The first time we lay eyes upon the historic city (as well as when we see the Argonath in the first film) is one of the most moving in the trilogy, as it makes us feel like we touch history itself.
