personal views on movies... and some other things

Is this it? Is this Gary Oldman's Oscar?

You all know Gary Oldman. the impeccable character actor known from numerous roles and films such as Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Milton Glenn in Murder in the First (1995), Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale in The Scarlet Letter (1995), Zorg in Luc Besson's sci-fi classic The Fifth Element (1997), the Russian terrorist Ivan in Air Force One (1997) as well as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies and Jim Gordon in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight series. Yet, after a longer than 30-year career, Oldman had not been recognised for his talent by the Academy and everyone (well, everyone who cares about these things) was wondering where is Gary Oldman's Oscar?
Finally, 2011 arrived and so did a British spy drama called Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy based on famous writer John LeCarrĆ©'s novel. It was then and there that somebody finally saw this extra talented guy and said: "well, look at that." And that's how Gary Oldman earned his first Oscar Nomination for an Actor in a Leading Role. [That's not to say that Oldman hadn''t already won two BAFTA Awards for Best Film and Best Screenplay for the movie Nil by Mouth (1997)]. The Oscar, however,  went to Jean Dujardin for his performance in The Artist and since then no other nominations came for Oldman.
Until now. This year Darkest Hour is coming out. It is a film directed by the unique and romantic director of Pride & Prejudice (2005), Atonement (2007), Hanna (2011) and Anna Karenina (2012), Joe Wright. In it Gary Oldman portrays Winston Churchill, the British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1955.
Darkest Hour takes place in the first days of Churchill's service when he has to face the dilemma to explore a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany or stand firm to his ideals for liberty and freedom of the British nation. Oldman's transformation for the film is somewhat jaw-dropping (it will most certainly get a nomination for Best Make-Up) and his perfomance as shown in the first trailer for the film, which was released yesterday, seems exceptional and worthy of his talent and abilities.
Could it be that this year, Gary Oldman will be the one standing on stage and holding -at last- his most deserved golden award? Fingers crossed. The film, for once, looks quite engaging and intriguing and that can only help and promote a great performance. All that's left for us is wait and see.
Here is the trailer for Darkest Hour.
