personal views on movies... and some other things

The 83rd Academy Awards® were well-deserved, the show was...hmm..

This was it. The long awards season is finally over and The King's Speech has been eventually announced the best film of the year. Either you agree or not, what's done is done. As Steven Spielberg said before opening the envelope with the result of the Best Picture category: "In a moment, one of these ten movies will join a list that includes On the Waterfront, Midnight Cowboy, The Godfather and The Deer Hunter. The other nine will join a list that includes The Grapes Of Wrath, Citizen Kane, The Graduate and Raging Bull.".  Which means that just because a film doesn't take home the big award, it will not be necessarily forgotten. (Which also means, that just because it won, this doesn't make it the best of the year..Just saying.)

The King's Speech was the winner of the big award but it wasn't the big winner at all. It just won 4 awards in total, the same with Inception which was the big technical winner. (Way to go, Academy, for "forgetting" Nolan for Best Director). The Social Network on the other hand, which was the up-to-very-recently top choice for almost every award for which it was nominated, took just 3 awards. Here's the list:

  • The King's Speech 4 awards [Best Picture, Achievement in Directing {Tom Hooper}, Actor in a Leading Role {Colin Firth}, Original Screenplay]
  • Inception 4 awards [Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects]
  • The Social Network 3 awards [Film Editing, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay]
  • Alice in Wonderland 2 awards [Art Direction, Costume Design]
  • The Fighter 2 awards [Supporting Actor {Christian Bale} Supporting Actress {Melissa Leo}]
  • Toy Story 3 2 awards [Animated Feature Film, Original Song]
  • Black Swan 1 award [Actress in a Leading Role {Natalie Portman}]
  • God of Love 1 award [Short Film]
  • In a Better World 1 award [Foreign Language Film - Denmark]
  • Inside Job 1 award [Documentary]
  • The Lost Thing 1 award [Short Film (Animated)]
  • Strangers No More 1 award [Documentary (Short Subject)]
  • The Wolfman 1 award [Makeup]
Personally, I am pretty satisfied with the awards considering the nominations (on which I had a few objections, indeed) although I would really prefer Inception to win for Original Screenplay and either Alexandre Desplat or Hans Zimmer to win for Score. And although I really liked Colin Firth in The King's Speech, my personal favourite is James Franco for 127 Hours.

Which brings us to the Awards Show itself that can be easily described with one word: boring. I believe that this was the first time that there wasn't a funny opening monologue. Did someone kidnap the writers? And what was the deal with the pictures of older films like Gone with the Wind, Shrek, The Lord of the Rings and Titanic in the background? Unlike other years, some really memorable films were released in 2010 and "paying homage" to the older films was awkward.
As for the hosts, Anne Hathaway was honestly trying and whenever she stepped out of the (god awful) script, the night was getting better, but James Franco seemed like he was either completely uncomfortable or really bored. And where were the funny presenters? The most memorable quote came out of Kirk Douglas's mouth and it was the "you know" that he said repeatedly before announcing the winner of the Supporting Actress category. Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. were also good.
As for the acceptance speeches, Melissa Leo said the "f" word, Christian Bale's moving "thank you" to his wife and daughter was really touching and he also made a funny comment on his much discussed rant on the Terminator Salvation set two years ago: "Melissa (Leo), I'm not going to drop the f-bomb like she did, I've done that plenty before." Natalie Portman was really touching also.

The best moment of the show, however, was the following, which made us miss Billy Crystal and we couldn't help but wonder why he wasn't the host this year (and why not? every year!):
