AIFF 2015: "El Incendio" aka "The Fire" Review

Juan Schnitman takes us into the life of Lucia (Pilar Gamboa) and Marcelo (Juan Barberini) two 30-year-olds who live together but don't seem to get along really well. From the opening scene we undestand that there are many things on which they disagree and we always get the feeling that this is not going to end well.

Lucia and Marcelo set off for the bank and as they start to tape money on their bodies, strange thoughts pass from our minds. Yet, they're withdrawing money to buy their first apartment. Soon, we realize that the gap between them is immense. Marcelo feels jealous and isolated as Lucia's parents have provided most of the money for the purchase, while Lucia seems to have a lot of unspoken inner issues that she's only shared with her doctor. "We're doing everything wrong" she admits and the audience wonders when they'll both accept it and what they're going to do about it.
Their relationship goes downhill from the moment the signing of the contract gets postponed for the next day. Their life is like an almost-full glass and their problems start to overflow from its edge. Nothing seems to work right. They're both in dead-end jobs feeling trapped and they don't even seem to love each other anymore which leads to some very intense moments between them.
El Incendio was one of the most raw and honest portrayals of a really problematic couple that we've seen in a long time. The cinematography is too realistic to make the audience sympathize with either the characters or their situation no matter how extremely real the performances are. As the film was ending, the atmosphere in the theatre was quite numb. Could El Incendio honestly be closing like this? Surely, there's something missing. There were many unanswered questions in the end and one is left to wonder why this was all happening to these young unfortunate people. Why do they have so many issues and why, in God's name, have they allowed this condition to go that far? I guess we'll never learn.

El Incendio was shown on the 5th day of the AIFF, Monday, September 28th.
