AIFF 2015: "You΄re Ugly Too" Review

Mark Noonan's debut is a modest yet well-crafted small Irish film that depends a lot on its actors' chemistry and talent. You're Ugly Too tells the story of Will [Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones)], a man who is let out of jail to take care of his 11-year-old niece, Stacey (Lauren Kinsella) due to his sister's untimely death.
Thus, a journey of getting-to-know one another begins and it doesn't always go as planned. Both Will and Stacey try to cope with their feelings of loss and self-rediscovery in different ways that somehow come in conflict with each other. But, at the same time one can see the love and the equal respect that both of them express. Will is quite patient with his know-it-all, witty but also curt niece, and Stacey seems to love him besides the fact that he's spent time in jail. But as with all families, there are secrets that come to light. Will is apparently hiding something: why did he go in prison in the first place? And will it affect Stacey?
The relationship betweet the two is quite well-represented, but where the story feels quite short is when the duo meets other people whose stories remain unexplained and actually never add anything to the plot.
The narrative could only go one way but its unoriginality is not something bad because You're Ugly Too is a trully sweet story with many interesting moments and even more funny ones. The one who steals the show however is the little Lauren Kinsella with the unforced and natural way of delivering her lines. She shines.

The movie was shown on the 9th day of the AIFF, Friday, October 2nd. The director Mark Nooman was present.
