Striking Scores Vol. 2

Every once in a while we'll revisit some of the most memorable scores written for films or TV series. Music is, after all, one of the most important aspects of film-making as it manages (or fails) to create the proper atmosphere for the story and the journey of the characters.
The first score we will honour, this new year, shall be the unforgettable Lord of the Rings score composed by Howard Shore. This epic and tremendously big score was an extremely difficult undertaking for the composer as he had to write musical themes for all the peoples of Middle-Earth, Hobbits, Men, Elves, Orcs (including some powerful objects such as the One Ring), themes that would unravel in the course of three lengthy films.
One can underestimate how hard it can be to make up a whole musical culture for a mythical universe, let alone a realistic one that can accompany the heroes and persuade the viewers while setting the right mood without simultaneously stealing the spotlight from the story itself. Even more difficult is for the score to be able to do all that and also to stand alone whenever we like to hear it. And Howard Shore's creation has achieved exactly that. Have in mind that orchestras around the world have presented this fascinating music to audiences that did not need the movie to appreciate its beauty and greatness. Enjoy!
