An Alan Rickman Tribute

It's been a sad week for music lovers everywhere this second week of 2016 due to David Bowie's sudden death and today cinema lovers got their own unpleasant surprise as it was annunced that Alan Rickman, the celebrated British actor with the distinctive deep voice lost his battle with cancer and died this Thursday, January 14th.
Alan Rickman most notably known to the newest generations by his portrayal of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series was born in West London and first chased after a career in graphic design but soon fell in love with theatre and at the age of 26 received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and went on acting for more than 40 years. His career took place on the big screen as well as on stage and television and he also sat on the director's chair.
It is quite strange to hear about the loss of a person whom we might never have met up close but has nonetheless been a part of our lives for a long time. It feels like a part of you has gone missing and with that, the sometimes nonsensical hope that there would be a chance for us to really meet those who have accompanied us while we have been growing up.
Here, we are going to remember a few of his most memorable moments on the big screen. Thank you, Alan Rickman and farewell.
  • Die Hard (1988), Rickman's first movie appearance opposite Bruce Willis' John McClane.

  • Truly Madly Deeply (1990), Anthony Minghella's romantic film where Rickman played a ghost and even learnt how to play the violin.

  • Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), Rickman played the Scheriff of Nottingham opposide Kevin Costner.

  • Sence and Sensibility (1995). In Ang Lee's adaptation of Jane Austen's classic book, Rickman played the role of respectable Colonel Brandon who was so much in love with Kate Winslet's Marianne Dashwood.

  • Dogma (1999). In Kevin Smith's rather original comedy, the beloved actor played the angel Metatron who is the messenger of God.

  • Galaxy Quest (1999) is the second comedy that Alan Rickman made in the same year and this time he is Alexander Dane, a stage actor who has the misfortune to be known for his role in a sci-fi TV Series called Galaxy Quest and feels that his talents are quite underappreciated.

  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005). This rather uneven adaptation of Douglas Adams's hilarious books also featured Alan Rickman in the role of a robot that suffers with depression and does not see the point of living.

  • Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006). Tom Tykwer's adaptation of Patrick Suskind's novel is the story of a man who has a superior oflactory sense and searches for the perfect scent. He soon catches the scent of Laura Richis (Rachel Hurd-Wood) whose father is Alan Rickman.

  • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). In this victorian musical Rickman plays the strict and corrupt judge who sentences Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) to a life of hard labour in Australia.

  • Harry Potter Series (2001-2011). The iconic potions master Professor Snape became even more memorable by the outstanding performance of the only actor J.K. Rowling, author of the series, had in mind while she was writing her extremely successful books. The at first suspiciously mean character evolves to a very deep personality over the course of eight films making movie-goers everywhere identify with the feelings of lost and unrequired love by a man who managed to show everything without even speaking. Fun fact: Rickman was the only actor who knew his character's story arc from the very beginning.
