A Hitchcock a Day - The 39 Steps

The 39 Steps is a very old Hitchcock movie, filmed in 1935. It stars Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll and Lucie Mannheim  and it is an adaptation of the very famous novel "The 39 Steps" by John Buchan.

The film starts with a show in a music hall in London. Richard Hannay is a canadian visitor who happens to be attending the show. One of the most prestigious presentations is the "Mr. Memory"'s show with a man who can memorise 50 facts a day.
After the show, Hannay meets a woman who he invites to his apartment. She shares with him a story about  spies and she confesses that she is followed.
Hannay offers to hide her in his flat for the night but after a few hours, she is murdered.
Naturally, Hannay decides to run for it as he doesn't want to be considered a murdered. And thus, a man chase begins.
He ends up in Scotland after following a map that the late woman was holding in her hand the moment she died. But the question remains: What are the 39 steps? And can Hannay trust anyone?
According to sources, John Buchan the author of the nover was impressed with the film despite its many departures from the book.
The 39 Steps is considered one of Hitchcock's best, but one cannot help but notice how old-fashioned it is. Unlike many other films of the decade, this is one of the movies that shows its age. However, it's really enjoyable in any way!

Director Cameo: Seven minuted into the film, Hitchcock walks down the road tossing a piece of paper.

Memorable Quotes:
