A Hitchcock a Day - Psycho

Psycho (1960) is one of the scariest Hitchcock movies ever (at least for me this is his scariest film). That is because while you watch the film and after the infamous bathroom scene, you can't help but feel a constant feeling of threat whenever one of the characters goes around a corner. The less you know about this film the better, however here's a small synopsis.

Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is a secretary who isn't really happy with her life. She has a relationship with Sam (Josh Gavin) but they can't get married because he gives most of his money in alimony.

One day, she decides to steal $40,000 from her boss and run away to start a new life.

On her way towards her new life she stops at a motel named "The Bates Hotel" where she meets the owner Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). Anthony Perkins gives an terrific performance in my opinion.

That's when everything goes wrong. And that's where I stop the synopsis in case you haven't seen the film.

Psycho is in black & white and it is Hitchcock's last b&w film. The main reason for this is to make it less expensive.

Alfred Hitchcock had previously bought the rights to the book and then he bought as many copies of the novel as possible to keep the ending a secret.

Originally, Hitchcock had envisioned the shower scene to be silent. It was Bernard Herrmann, the composer, that suggested a musical theme and Hitchcock, after seeing the scene with the addition of music, had to agree.

This is Hitchcock's first horror movie and his biggest box-office success. It is a trully amazing film full of surprises and twists.

Finally, let's remember the amazing theme from the film:

Director Cameo: Outside Marion's office, four minutes in.

Memorable Quotes:

"We all go a little mad sometimes"
Norman Bates

"A boy's best friend is his mother"
Norman Bates
