A Hitchcock a Day - Rope

Rope (1948) is a very unique Hitchcock film that stars James Stewart, John Dall and Farley Granger. It's a simple story, really, but shot in a very original way.

This is a story about two men, Philip and Brandon who decide to make the perfect crime, a murder. Without getting caught in the end, that is.

However, their plan has some elements that you wouldn't expect. They decide to have a party on the day of the murder, inviting all of the victim's relatives and close friends, while the body is still in the room.

They also invite a former teacher of theirs, played by James Stewart, who in the past had expressed some very strange opinions on murder and death.

The film is like watching a stage play unroll in front of your eyes and why not? It is actually based on a play by Patrick Hamilton

The story explores how far the human mind can go once you put a single idea of immorality in it. What would you do if you thought you could play "God" for one day?

The film's uniqueness is that it's the first attempt for a one-shot movie. It is devided into ten takes that last 10 minutes each. At the end of the takes, the camera zooms into a dark object making the transition to another take easier.

Another interesting fact is that this is Hitchcock's first picture in colour.

No matter its significance, this is the only film James Stewart made with Alfred Hitchcock that he did not like. He thought he was miscast.
