AIFF 2014: What We Do In The Shadows

In 2013 camera crews gained access to a highly secretive society. Its headquarters and the daily life of its four members are being documented. This is footage that has never been seen before and will answer the question of what vampires do in the shadows
This isn't your typical vampire movie. From the creators of Flight of the Conchords and Eagle vs Shark, What we do in the Shadows is a hilarious film that takes the vampire genre and respectfully ridicules it. The film is presented in the form of a documentary that follows the every day lives of four vampires who live together in a house in Wellington, New Zealand. Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) and Petyr (Ben Fransham) -the latter being an homage to the classic Nosferatu- move past their blood-sucking insticts, their immortality and their ability to fly and just try to co-exist as roomates and that is honestly their greatest challenge.
The four of them are not the only people that we get to see during this mockumentary though. There is Jackie (Jackie van Beek) who helps Deakon and wants to be eventually bitten so that she can enjoy immortal life, Nick (Cori Gonzalez-Macuer) a recently-turned vampire and Stu (Stuart Rutherford) a human who befriends the vampires and even introduces them to 21-century technology. And there are also werewolves.
It's been a while since I've watched a film that made me laugh out loud and even more so, a comedy that never seemed to drag and ended at exactly the moment it should have. What we do in the Shadows is an example of great comedic writing making it not only a must-see but one of the most enjoyable films that you'll experience this year and you might even want to see it again.
