personal views on movies... and some other things

AIFF 2013: Inch΄Allah

From the producers of the Oscar nominated Incendies (2010) and Monsieur Lahzar (2011) comes this new film about Chloe (Evelyne Brochu), a Canadian doctor who works for the Red Crescent and divides her time between Jerusalem, where she lives next to her friend and soldier Ava (Sivan Levy), and Ramallah where she works.
Chloe passes daily the checkpoint that divides the two cities so that she can reach the hospital where she treats pregnant women, one of which is Rand (Sabrina Ouazani). We soon become acquainted with her and her family.
As time passes and as Chloe spends more time with the people living in these occupied territories, she becomes more sensitive to their situation and starts questioning the way they live as well as the reasons behind their animosity. The will to build a bridge between her two friends who live on opposite sides starts to grow in her but she soon fnds herself lost in this incomprehensible world while at the same time she remains a foreigner to it.
The film didn't manage to touch me as much as I had hoped because I didn't get attached to the characters as much as I would have liked but its realistic and documentary-styled point of view makes it one of the most interesting films of the festival.
