AIFF 2013: Blackfish

Documentary or psychological thriller? That is what goes through your mind as you watch Blackfish
Can this really be true? Do people treat animals like this? These are of course, rhetorical questions and the answer is a big yes. We capture animals, we put them in confined places and we use them for entertainment. And when they act a bit strange or aggressively, we blame their natural insticts. What would you do if you had to live 30 years of your life in a bathtub? That's what one of the interviewees asks and you have to admit that it's a decent question.
Blackfish follows the story of Tilikum, an agressive male Orca (or a.k.a. "killer whale") that's killed 3 people while in captivity. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite uses shocking footage (but not too graphic) and emotional interviews -mainly from former Orca trainers- to tell the true story of the whale that's lived its whole life in a swimming pool and asks the question: "what are the devastating consequences of keeping intelligent creatures captive?"
The documentary may not have many raw or graphic images but it surely isn't for the light-hearted. It is emotional and disturbing but on the other hand you feel justified when you hear harsh words about this type of entertainment from people who used to be in this industry. There surely is no way you'll see aquariums the same way after having watched this film.
