AIFF 2013: Kon-Tiki

What a beautiful movie, this was. Kon-Tiki is a Norwegian film directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg that was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film this past year.
This was such a great ride and it was all based on a true story. The film's protagonist is Thor Heyerdahl (Pal Sverre Hagen) a daredevil, adventurer and explorer who wants to prove that South Americans were able to settle in Polynesia in pre-Columbian times. For this reason, and because nobody wants to publish his thesis if there's no actual proof of his claims, he decides to make a legendary 4,300-mile (8,000 km) crossing of the Pacific Ocean on a hand-made raft. Heyerdahl actually made a documentary about this epic journey back in the 1950s and even won an Oscar Award for it.
I hadn't watched this film back during the awards season but how could I have missed it? It may not be flawless - many of its characters are underdeveloped and the voyage is presented less dangerous than it probably was- but it has some beautiful scenes in it and it tells the story of an extraordinary journey, the sort that everyone hopes to have the courage to experience in their lifetime. Wonderful and highly recommended.
