AIFF 2013: What Richard Did

"What would you do?" That is the question that this film asks its audience. Would you make the moral choice no matter what or would you be selfish and prefer to save yourself even if it'd potentially destroy you in the end?
What Richard Did is a small Irish film directed by Lenny Abrahamson that follows an 18-year-old boy, Richard Karlsen (Jack Reynor) who's a golden-boy athlete and a favourite among his group of friends. His story takes place during the summer after school has finished and before the beginning of university when Richard has his whole future ahead of him - a future that seems as bright as can be.

Richard finds love in the face of the beautiful Lara (Roisin Murphy) and everything goes well until his jealousy strikes and Richard does something that will change his life forever. What he does shatters the lives of the people closest to him and creates a huge gap between who he thought he was and who he proves to be.
Thought-provoking and interesting, What Richard Did presents some great performances from actors that were chosen through improvisational workshops that Abrahamson had started one whole year before filming. This is classic raw european cinema at its best and leaves you with more to think that it is first believed. What would you choose?
