AIFF 2013: 20 Feet From Stardom

We've all heard their voices, we've all sung along to their melodies and we can't imagine certain songs without their contribution. 20 Feet from Stardom, a documentary about the backup singers of famous musicians, was shown at the 19th Athens International Film Festival this past weekend.
Directed by Morgan Neville and following the lives and experiences of Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Merry Clayton, Táta Vega and Judith Hill, the film introduces us to the difficulties and obstacles that people with extraordinary vocal talents have to overcome in order not only to establish a name and find work next to the "monsters" of the music industry but also to step into the spotlight themselves.
The business of singing is just that: a business, and that's what we learn from this very realistic - and still, very optimistic - documentary. You cannot succeed in this tough world if you don't have the strength, the connections, the - not always necessary- talent and the will to sacrifice a lot. But mostly, it is a matter of luck. Αnd sometimes it just doesn't work.
Accompanied by some big names of the music industry, such as Bruce SpringsteenMick Jagger and Sting, these five amazingly talented women share their thoughts on the job they've chosen to do and narrate the choices they've made, their mistakes, their favourite moments, the injustice they might have experienced as well as some of their regrets.
Even if their names won't be universally acknowledged in the distant future, their voices will be, and that's saying something about their importance.
