personal views on movies... and some other things

AIFF 2013: All Is Lost

Desperation. That's all you can think and feel while watching J. C. Chandor (Margin Call) 's new film.

Robert Redford dominates the screen and keeps you on your toes throughout the 109 minutes that the film follows his journey for survival. A journey that seems as real and feels as raw as if you experience it yourself. It helps that there is lack of music and the existence of natural sounds is dominant: the sea, the birds, the protagonist's breathing and panting.
Mind you, this is not an easy film to watch and even if is is brilliant and breathtaking (literally - everyone in the audience was holding their breath) it is not easily re-watchable. However, Redford gives one of the best performances in his life and for that alone, it is worth it.
Soul-shattering and riveting as it is, All is Lost made me lose myself watching it (no pun intended), something that doesn't happen too often lately. Striving for breath, calculating what you would do in a similar situation, panting just thinking about it, feeling sea-sick just from the sound of the water, feeling desperate for a resolution, it's only a movie... breath.
